History of BloodFire Studios

The name BloodFire Studios was inspired by the Type O Negative song "Blood and Fire" and from their "Bloody Kisses" LP. ---- "...I'd rather be alone.
No more nights. Of blood and fire."

In 1996, the world was a very different place. The millennium, or the end of time as it came to be know, was just around the corner. After 27 years, Betty Rubble debuts as a Flintstone vitamin, Miami Dolphin coach Don Shula announces his retirement, Blizzard buries eastern U.S. causing at least 50 deaths, France performs nuclear test at Muruora Island, Howard Stern Radio Show premieres in York Pennsylvania, and O. J. Simpson appears on British TV discussing his not guilty verdict. What was the world coming to? When would the madness end? What would Y2K be like? Who would save us?

“Who would save us?”

That question would be answered deep in the Nevada Desert in a dark corner known only as “Las Vegas”. Dennis Greenhill and Lee Kohse, with the help of a whole lot of Caffeine and a whole lot of no sleep, laid the groundwork for the stories "Dark Tarot" and "Dragoons", and began an epic journey to save the world one comic book story at a time. Call it delusions of grandeur, call it a caffeine overdose, call it a transcendental hiccup, but these two thought they were on to something. Only history would judge. 1997 was a frustrating year for our heroes when they offered up their souls in the form of several stories to their then publisher only to be rejected with the comment “If you every want to see your stories printed, you will have to do it yourselves”. And so, on the threshold of the end of days and with their tails between their legs, Dennis and Lee left. The winds blew fierce out of the Northeast as a blinding snow fall caused the worst Whiteout in the San Diego history. With a glint in their eye, our intrepid heroes stoked the fires of hope and gave rise to BloodFire Studios, a stronghold of cutting edge creativity in a vast sea of mediocrity.

And so, the saga began.

In 1999, BloodFire Studios released their first book, Dark Tarot, over the internet. In July of that same year, BloodFire Studios made it's first leap into the fires of comicbookdom by purchasing a booth at the San Diego Comic Con. With nothing more then a preview book of Dark Tarot, some low budget tee shirts and a hand painted backdrop, a seed was planted. Over the next few years, Dark Tarot saw a transformation into a full story. It met with just enough success to float the company into the following year. The company mantra at that time was "Make Back Booth". And so it went, right up until the time that a bunch of little goth kids waltzed onto the scene. Enter- stage right--- Kindergoth.

2002 saw a milestone for BloodFire. The birth of the Dead Bonsai Society. A new series entitled Kindergoth was thrust upon the world. And boy did they like it. Thousands of times a day over the course of the San Diego Comic Con, we repeated the words, "Its about tattooed, body pierced, kindergarteners trying to save the world from an alien invasion." The response you ask? Dead Silence. Then a roar of laughter. It seemed we had something here. Kindergoth: Tiny Green Men far exeeded the company's hopes and dreams. Kindergoth: TGM also represented the first time a BloodFire book was carried through Diamond Comics for mass distribution. It set the bar and has paved the way for all the stories that followed. Capitalizing on the thrill ride that was Kindergoth, Lee and Dennis signed a major name in the industry to do a one-shot. From the deep dark recesses of the mind of 5 time Eisner nominee, Jeromy Cox, came Vampyrates. It was the first full color book the studio had produced and featured the 14 page Kindergoth story, "Cafeteria Havoc". Again the Studio had great success and again Diamond was on board.
Hooray for 2004.

Since 2004, the question “Who would save us?” has still haunted the halls of BloodFire Studios. Fortunately, 4 more pieces to the puzzle has been found. 4 very important and amazing pieces. Intergalactic, Utopiates, Diary of Night, The DNA Hacker Chronicles, all serve as a bridge from the past to the far distance future. Each one has some of the most talented personalities in the industry attached to them and they stand as a beacon in the dark uncertain world of comic books.

So where are we now?

To date we have been very fortunate in that EVERY book that we have sent to Diamond has been picked up. Add to that accolades such as Employee Picks and Spotlights, as well as BloodFire Comics having been repeatedly featured on the top 100 indy books list and the top 300 sales list for all books including those from Marvel, DC, Image, and Dark Horse. A great feat for a lil ol' indie like us.

Now, onto Tomorrowland...

There is always just one more step to take, one more piece of the puzzle to find, one more twist in the road to navigate. 2008 sees BloodFire making those steps. At the helm of the good ship BloodFire for 2008 is creator/ editor/ writer guru Len Wein. Len will continue to maintain the quality of story, art, and products that we have established over the past years. BloodFire will continue to search out cutting edge stories and continue to bring in top notch talent. We will continue to produce the mainstays of the company. The future also means new and more diverse avenues to deliver our stories to markets that we have yet to conquer.

And so now you know.
